Stoned Agin

This 1971 original poster by famed artist R. Crumb known for his counterculture work in comics and street art both captures and mocks a visual representation of what larger square society still imagined ‘stoners’ experienced after toking out on weed. Having introduced America to Fritz The Cat in 1965 and the Keep On Truckin’ strip in 1968, the six panels in this poster employ Crumb’s iconic style to depict a hippie having just enjoyed a pipe hit and subsequently his face melts off in a progression from one panel to the next until it is puddled on the table in front of him. Below the imagery a disclaimer appears as a spoof on the messaging that often abounded in Nixon-era America. The ‘CTA’ noted in the disclaimer is an acronym for Call To Action, a common refrain heard among the revolutionary circles at play in the counterculture at the time, followed by a sarcastic declaration that “none of our musicians will be under the influence” at any CTA engagement.
