The Devil’s Mischief (1986)

An eclectic art book published by a small imprint during the mid-1980s, this hardback first edition features a color cover plate in the Old World style and is cleverly presented as if the work were an autobiography-meets-diary penned by Lucifer himself.

Tapping the lush imagery generated throughout the ages of Lucifer, Morning Star and Satan — among other iterations of the Fallen One — the book blends fine writing and witty asides with seductive and at times piercing questions which evoke a deeper consideration of the human condition and, as such, perhaps the Devil’s multiple openings to whisper sweet-not-so-nothings in our ears.

This is not a Satanist tome by any stretch, at least of the Anton LaVey variety, but rather a far more playful, enticing, absurd and utterly thoughtful response to the Abrahamic traditions’ damnation of Old Nick.

Which raises the possibility: Maybe he did author it after all.

Condition: Very Good, with mild cover wear.
