When Asylum Records released Hotel California in December 1976, the label’s executives probably felt confident that they had another winner on their hands courtesy of The Eagles, but it is safe to say they couldn’t possibly have known that the album was the band’s Sgt. Pepper moment, a masterwork that would become a cultural touchstone for a generation that captured not only California in all of its mid-1970s auburn haze, but America with its face in the mirror.

The songwriting partnership of Glenn Frey and Don Henley reached a pinnacle as did the band’s musicianship.

The conceptual artwork for the album also took the band to a new level that did not go unnoticed by fans and critics alike and rumor continue to abound about the gatefold scene inside the album.

Included in the original pressing of the album was this poster of the band in full Hotel California regalia, and one of the rumors surrounding this image was that Glenn Frey, centered between guitarist Don Felder and bassist Randy Meisner, had partied all night before the photo shoot and was so bombed during the session that he had to be propped between his two bandmates.

It may just be a rock tale of excess, but looking at Frey in the poster, he appears to be so blown out that it may well be true.

Who knows, but this original poster is framed in custom multilayered decorative wood.
