I, Swinger

This 1994 original promotional poster was commissioned by SubPop Records in support of its band Combustible Edison, which had just signed with the label and released their first album of the same name. The Los Angeles Times gushed about the band’s debut album: “I, Swinger perfectly duplicates the ‘50s cool and hi-fi exotica of such lounge icons as Martin Denny.” The album’s release captured the resurgence of the ‘Swinger’ scene of cocktail lounges and hipsters, one that would gain further national momentum in America with the release of the Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau film Swingers. With the album catching attention, in December 1994 the band played Conan O’Brien’s late night show and went on to notable success with the genre before calling it quits before the decade came to an end. This poster had been displayed at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard, then was given to a collector who had it framed in a fine New England wood fashion before it found its way to Delickedly. While evoking almost a Parisian café sensibility, the artwork perfectly exemplifies the Swinger vibe that was getting its second wind in America more than three decades ago.
