Bush Halts Combat: Los
Angeles Times Front Page Offset Plate

The broadsheets of the 20th century may be largely behind us, but the power of the daily newspaper still lingers. Major papers such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times continue to shape public conversation and influence the day’s editorial agenda.

This aluminum offset press plate was used to print the front page of the Los Angeles Times on February 28, 1991, as President George H. W. Bush declared an end to combat in the First Gulf War. The centered headline, “Bush Halts Combat,” is paired with the subhead “War Is Now Behind Us.”

The plate includes images of Bush, General Norman Schwarzkopf, and Kuwaiti crowds, capturing the moment when the American-led coalition defeated the Iraqi Army in just over a month of offensive combat.

Dimensions: Fourteen inches horizontally, Twenty-three inches vertically (14 x 23”)

Condition: Good. Some bruising of the plate due to natural bending during press run and peripheral smudges. Text and images very clear and plate in good condition.
