Told By Uncle Remus: New Stories of The Old Plantation (1905)

This 1905 hardback edition of Joel Chandler Harris’s classic series of stories documenting folklore stories that circulated through the American South during the Reconstruction period that followed the Civil War was published by Grosset & Dunlap (New York) and features the rich illustrative work of A. B. Frost, J.M. Conde and Frank Verbeck.

While considered controversial by some in the later years of the 20th Century for its depiction of slaves, the plantation and other aspects of the Antebellum period, the stories related by Harris’s Uncle Remus were beloved by many more for their magical quality and the rich oral history that emerged from the African-American experience during that era of horrific human bondage and abomination of slavery.

The folktales spun by Uncle Remus evoked the memorable characters of Br’er Rabbit and his frequent adversaries in the forms of Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear and they often included useful bits of advice relating to surviving daunting challenges.

Condition: Fair. The bulk of the book is in good condition, including almost all interior pages; however, the cover is aged and some wearing on the cover illustrative plate is visible and the spine is detaching in areas.
